In recent days, there has been growing speculation in the United States about the possibility that the Brooklyn Nets will open next season when its two senior stars are no longer part of the roster.

After it was reported on Tuesday (Wednesday) that the club is in no hurry to offer a new contract to Kyrie Irving, the American media point out that parting ways with the center could lead to Kevin Durant's demand to transfer him as well.

Irving holds the option to become a free agent this summer, and Brooklyn is considering giving it up in light of the multiplicity of absences and problematic off-field conduct.

But such a move may upset Durant, who signed with the team in 2019 first to unite forces with Kyrie.

And if KD, who unlike Irving is signed until 2026 with no exit options, finds himself on a squad that includes the unreliable Ben Simmons alongside a collection of complementary players, he may well require the Nets to trade him - something management will have to take seriously.

It is not clear what Durant's position is regarding Irving.

There is also the possibility that the forward understands that if the center had not refused to get vaccinated at the start of the current season, it could be that James Harden would not have left for Philadelphia and perhaps the Hunts would still be in contention for the championship this season.

The problem is, according to a report in the New York Daily News on Wednesday, the Brooklyn management has not contacted Durant at all since the team finished its way to the playoffs, and this disconnect certainly does not contribute to the star-club relationship.

Will his departure result in the Nets' parting from KD?

Beyond the fact that Brooklyn will have a hard time getting a fair return for Durant, a superstar of this magnitude who could also veto any option he does not like, going through a rebuilding process is unrealistic for the Hunts: Houston received the rights to their first five draft picks for the next five years.

It is not inconceivable that this situation will lead Brooklyn to back down from its position regarding the renewal of Irving's contract.

If the Nets still insist on giving up the wayward star, they must also prepare for a possible Durant departure.
