As early as 1950, Formula 1 drove through Monaco.
However, the future of the race in the small principality is uncertain.
The distance
Monte Carlo - none is shorter.
According to official information, it measures only 3337 meters.
Neither is any slower.
Who is surprised, with 19 curves on the short distance.
The layout only allows for a limited amount of excitement: in qualifying.
In the race, overtaking is almost impossible on the narrow course.
But the route offers pure tradition with passages such as the legendary Rascasse, with Mirabeau, the tunnel or along the swimming pool.
The location
It is the place of longing for the rich and beautiful.
The number one attraction for all tourists along the French Riviera.
The principality is only around two square kilometers in size, and it is just 30 kilometers from Nice International Airport.
And Cannes, the location of the world-famous film festival, is less than 60 kilometers away.
Which, however, causes problems: Due to the literally narrow location of the street circuit in the middle of the many high-rise buildings and the nearby rocks, alternative routes to increase the excitement of the often monotonous races are difficult to find.
The stats
There have already been 67 races in Monaco.
But never a Monegasque winner.
The Brazilian icon Ayrton Senna won the most frequently with six triumphs at the Circuit de Monaco.
Record world champion Michael Schumacher and Graham Hill each celebrated five victories in Monte Carlo.
A year ago, the future world champion Max Verstappen drove the Red Bull for the first time to finish first in Monaco.
The history
It is a look back to the inaugural year of Formula 1. As early as 1950, the premier class drove in Monaco.
There followed a break before the principality was the site of the PS spectacle with one exception since 1955.
In 2020 the race had to be canceled due to the corona pandemic.
The question before this year's race: What's next?
The contract ends with the Grand Prix 2022. dpa
