Monaco – At hardly any Formula 1 Grand Prix is qualifying as important as in Monaco.

Anyone who takes pole position or is on the front row of the grid has the best chance of victory.

The chances of overtaking on the principality's narrow street circuit are limited.

Since 1997, the eventual winner has always started from one of the first three places.

Ferrari driver and local hero Charles Leclerc has the best prospects.

We accompany the qualifying on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the live ticker.

Charles Leclerc fastest in training: Ferrari driver wants home win in Monaco

Charles Leclerc, who was born in Monegasque, already set the fastest time in training with 1:12.656 minutes.

Only his team-mate Carlos Sainz (+0.044 seconds) was able to follow Leclerc in the maze of curves in the Principality, which he knows very well.

The competition followed at a respectful distance on the shortest track on the racing calendar: world champion and world championship leader Max Verstappen was fourth on a lap 0.447 seconds slower, his stable colleague Sergio Perez (+0.379) took third place.

Mercedes couldn't keep up.

Record world champion Lewis Hamilton complained several times about strong jumping.

The world champion racing team actually believed that they had solved this problem with new parts, but last week in Barcelona the Silver Arrows were calm on the track and reduced the gap to the front.

On Friday, however, Hamilton did not get past twelfth place (+1.611), his teammate George Russell was sixth (+0.750).

Mick Schumacher with gearbox problems: Haas driver parks the car in the entrance to the pit lane

Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel in the Aston Martin finished ninth, a decent result (+1.403).

Mick Schumacher's Haas stopped in the first section due to a gearbox problem and he had to park his racing car in the entrance to the pit lane, which led to an interruption in practice.

Schumi junior lost a lot of training time.

The bottom line was that the 23-year-old was 17th (+2.238).

It is possible that the last Formula 1 race, at least for the time being, will take place in Monaco on Sunday (3 p.m. / Sky).

The contract expires, Formula 1 requires a significantly higher entry fee for an extension, among other things.
