Monte Carlo – Charles Leclerc took off his helmet, ran his fingers through his hair and waved contentedly to the fans at “his” track.
As in the previous year, the local hero is on pole position for the Monaco Grand Prix - but the signs are much better that the Ferrari driver can win this time and break his home curse.
"I'm so incredibly happy.
So far, it's been a weekend where everything has gone smoothly," said Leclerc after his 14th career pole and the fifth of the Formula 1 season.
When asked about the high probability of rain at the Grand Prix on Sunday (3 p.m. / Sky), he said coolly: "Whatever happens, we are competitive."

In fact, Leclerc has every reason to be confident.
The 24-year-old dominated almost all units, and his big World Cup rival Max Verstappen only qualified fourth.
And the drivers in second and third place crashed into each other spectacularly: when trying to beat Leclerc's pole time of 1:11.376 minutes, Verstappen's Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez lost control in Q3 in front of the tunnel and hit the barrier a.
Carlos Sainz in the second Ferrari crashed into him.
This ended qualifying for everyone early.
Next to Leclerc in the first row is Sainz, the Spaniard can act as a tactical "shield".
Behind him, Perez will start from third place alongside his team-mate Verstappen.
“Sergio Perez was simply too fast.
Bad luck, but that's Monte Carlo," said Red Bull motorsport consultant Helmut Marko succinctly on Sky.
Formula 1 in Monaco: Vettel ninth on the grid, Schumacher 15.
Mercedes played no role in the battle for the top spots.
Record world champion Lewis Hamilton finished eighth, his teammate George Russell (both England) was sixth.
"That's the reality.
It's not nice, but we have to deal with it," said Mercedes Motorsport Director Toto Wolff.

Former world champion Sebastian Vettel placed his Aston Martin in ninth place on the grid, while Haas driver Mick Schumacher started the Prestige Grand Prix from 15th place.
Leclerc has never reached the goal in five attempts in Formula 1 or Formula 2 in his home country - in 2021 he did not even make it onto the starting grid as a pole setter due to damage.
Back then he had a bad crash in qualifying, this time he was unscathed.
