Saint-Etienne's nightmare season ended tonight (Sunday) with a painful relegation in the home stadium, after a 5: 4 loss on penalties to Auxerre in the test matches - 1: 1 away and so also tonight in 120 minutes.
The luxury club, which has won the French championship 10 times, parted ways with the Ligue 1 after 18 years and the fans had a hard time coming to terms with the news and burst onto the pitch with flares, firecrackers and smoke grenades.

Donovan Leon excelled in Auxerre's goal in the first half and it seemed that Saint-Etienne's goal was in the air, but in the 51st minute the local crowd was left in shock after a Hamza Saki hit the net.
Gothia are almost stung with the second in the 67th minute, but after nine minutes two shots hit the corner on the other side and arranged a tie from the head of Mahdi Kamara who sent the game into extra time.

Jean-Marc Forlan, who twice promoted Troyes to the first division, dreamed of doing the same with the 1996 French champions and bit his finger on the bench during extra time, before fulfilling his dream on penalties.
The excellent Leon deflected Riyadh Bodboz's first kick, Auxerre was accurate in all five of its kicks and completed a return to the Premier League after a decade.
Saint-Etienne joins Bordeaux as two failed past empires that will have to rehabilitate themselves in the sub-league.
