The English club, which until then belonged to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, was sold for 4.5 billion euros to the businessman

It's official.

The sale of Chelsea is finalized.

The English club announced on Monday that the sale process to American businessman Todd Boehly and his consortium of investors had been finalized.

It no longer belongs to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who put the club up for sale after the start of the war in Ukraine.

"The consortium led by Todd Boehly, chairman and chief executive of Eldridge, and Clearlake Capital Group, today announced that the transfer of ownership of Chelsea Football Club is complete," the English club wrote in a statement posted on Twitter.

The takeover amounts to 4.5 billion euros, or nearly 4 billion pounds.

"Under the terms of the agreement, Boehly and Clearlake will have joint control and equal power within the club," the statement said.

The consortium also includes Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss and Mark Walter, a business partner of Boehly, with whom he shares ownership of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team.

“Make fans proud”

The takeover of the English club, which until then belonged to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, was finalized on Saturday.

A “final” agreement had been reached between Roman Abramovich and American investors, while the British government and the Premier League had approved this sale.

“We are honored to become the new managers of Chelsea Football Club.

Our vision as owners is clear: we want to make supporters proud,” said Todd Boehly in a press release.

Chelsea went up for sale in early March, days before Roman Abramovich, its owner since 2003, was sanctioned by the British government following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The British government considers Abramovich to be a member of Russian President Vladimir Putin's inner circle.

The oligarch is also the target of sanctions from the European Union.
