Stunning.
The sprinter Blessing Afrifa broke the Israeli record in the 200 meters tonight (Thursday), when he set a result of 20.71 seconds in the cadet and youth league that took place in Hadar Yosef in Tel Aviv.
In doing so, the 18-year-old Afrifa improved by 12 hundredths the previous record set at the end of March, then lowered 3 hundredths from the veteran record of Dmitry Glushchenko from 2009 when it seems that there is still something to be expected from the talented young runner later in the season, led by Yigal Ballon .
Afrippa, was born in Israel to parents who came from Ghana.
That his father came to Israel 32 years ago as an employee of the Ghanaian consulate, and in 2010 together with his family (his parents Cynthia and Prince, and his sister Mercy three years younger) were granted permanent resident status, following a government decision not to deport children of foreign workers born in Israel.
In early July 2020 the circle closed and Afrifa’s struggle bore fruit.
After struggles with the state bureaucracy, high-level recommendations and eventually the final stamp with the approval of Interior Minister Aryeh Deri, the young athlete, was given the coveted message that he could begin to represent Israel.
