Rafael Nadal is struggling through the clay court season.

For years, the tennis legend has had to deal with pain in everyday life.

Update from June 3rd:

Rafael Nadal made it back to the semifinals at this year's French Open despite his ongoing injury.

The Spaniard, who has won Roland Garros 13 times in his career, will compete with Alexander Zverev in the semifinals on Friday afternoon (game in the live ticker).

He already defeated Nadal's compatriot Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals.

First report from May 9th:

Madrid – The big star in Spanish tennis is Carlos Alcaraz, no longer Rafael Nadal.

This impression could arise with a view to the ATP Masters 1000 in Madrid.

Nadal dragged himself against qualifier David Goffin after four match points saved to a narrow win in the tiebreak of the third set.

In the quarter-finals, however, it was all over for the Mallorcan: Of all things, against the 19-year-old shooting star Alcaraz!

The youngster then won the title with a smooth final win over Alexander Zverev and was then hailed by the Spanish press as the "new Nadal".

After the round of 16: Nadal talks about everyday life in pain

After initial tournament victories, the current season is not going so well for Nadal.

As he admitted after beating David Goffin in the round of 16, he is struggling with health problems.

The clay court king had to pass six weeks in March because of a rib fracture.

But Nadal has an even bigger problem: his foot.

"My foot hurts and I'm lame with pain, it's part of my everyday life.

The injury is chronic and incurable," Nadal explained during the tournament in Madrid's Caja Magica.

"Some days the injuries don't allow me to do the right things to improve my game," explains Nadal.

Actually, he should have skipped the tournament.

"I've had better days and worse days.

But it was definitely not a catastrophe," said the record winner of the French Open anyway.

From May 22nd, Nadal will aim for his 14th French Open title despite all resistance.

"I'm just optimistic about the future," emphasized the Spaniard after the defeat against Alcaraz.

Last year Novak Djokovic won the second Grand Slam of the year.
