2022-06-05T05:16:20.799Z

The first two of Pro D2 face off this Sunday, June 5 in Montpellier (5:45 p.m.). The stakes are enormous: the winner will find the elite of French rugby, the Top 14.

Duel du Sud-Ouest this Sunday afternoon (5:45 p.m.).

The hour of the end of the 2021-2022 season of French rugby has come.

If the eyes are riveted on the last regular season matches of the Top 14, it will still be necessary to take a last look at the Pro D2.

Stade Montois, first in the championship in the regular season, will challenge Aviron Bayonnais, second.

A logical confrontation therefore, between two clubs which have had a single objective for months, years: the rise.

Stade Montois has the label of favorite

The Landes face the Basque Country this Sunday in neutral ground (Montpellier).

And in this beefy duel, you have to name a favorite: Mont-de-Marsan.

Patrick Milhet's men have dazzled with their collective strength this season, losing only 7 games in 30 games played.

He finished the main phase 1st, with 106 points on the clock (6 more than his opponent of the day).

A collective performance, of course, but with some individual gems, including scrum-half Léo Coly.

The recent French international (selected in group A by Fabien Galthié to prepare for the VI Nations) splashed the championship with his talent.

Very recent example in the promotion semi-final against Nevers, where the Montois scored 16 of his team's 26 points.

Before joining Montpellier next season, Léo Coly will be keen to make his team shine one last time in the most beautiful way.

Léo Coly is having a wonderful season with Stade Montois.

He scored 300 points in 26 Pro D2 matches (11.5 points per match on average).

Be careful all the same not to suffer too much against Bayonne.

Because the Stade Montois was still a little scared by losing the second half against the valiant and united Neversois.

Bayonne on a potato hunt

Aviron Bayonnais has been in operation “promotion at all costs” since its relegation last year.

The Basques had had a nightmarish end to the season, finishing 13th in the Top 14 first, then losing on penalties (5-6) against Biarritz in the play-off.

In Aguilera, Bayonne had taken on water against its neighbour, and wants to return to the surface this year.

Second in the championship at the end of the regular season (100 points, 20 wins, 2 draws and 8 losses), Yannick Bru's men then overcame Oyonnax in the semi-finals (32-20).

A meeting where the Bayonnais made a strong impression, with a recital from the back Gaëtan Germain (27 points scored out of the 32 of his team).

However, the Bayonnais will not have the advantage in Montpellier.

In two confrontations this season against Stade Montois, the Basques lost twice (14-33 at home last November, and 15-13 away in April).

But this time it's a final, anything is possible!

An electric game

As often during the Pro D2 play-offs, the meeting will be hot and the public boiling at the Yves-du-Manoir stadium in Montpellier.

For the two clubs, it's a whole people who will move to support them.

2,500 tickets were sold by Stade Montois in the Twickenham stand against 2,200 by Aviron Bayonnais in the Murrayfield stand.

And that's exactly what we love about rugby.

Hot in front!

Meeting oh so important therefore, which will nevertheless not be decisive for the loser, who will have a second chance in a play-off match against the 13th in the Top 14 (Perpignan or Brive).
