Six years after retiring, swimmer Michael Phelps was selected today (Monday) to enter the 2022 U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame.
Phelps is considered the best swimmer in history and one of the best athletes of all time, with 28 Olympic medals (including 16 personal medals).
He is also the Olympic champion with the most gold medals in the history of games in all sports - 23 gold medals (13 of them personal).
This is the first time since 2019 that a vote has been held for the United States Olympic and Paralympic Hall of Fame, which is a medal of honor for America's top Olympic athletes.
Its first members were admitted in 1983, but in the last election three years ago Phelps was not a candidate.
Phelps is not alone in the list.
With him are a number of other Olympic athletes who have been honored: Alpine skier Lindsay Von Olympic champion, former figure skater Michelle Kwan, formerly considered former footballer Mia Ham, former basketball coach Pat Summit, alpine skier Gretchen Fraser, and athlete Roger King.
For the Olympic team, the United States women's team was selected in 1976 in the 4x100m freestyle.
The Paralympics on the list: the all-time leading swimmer Trisha Zoren-Hudson with 55 medals, including 41 gold, plus skier Muffy Davis, and cyclist David Kylie, with the Paralympic team selected being the 2002 sled hockey team.
