The German tennis player who was forced to retire from the semi-final match against champion Rafael Nadal took another step on the road to recovery • In a post he posted on his Instagram page he updated on his condition, but did not specify when he will return to compete

A few days after being forced to retire from the Roland Garros semi-finals, German Alexander Zebrab underwent surgery yesterday (Tuesday) to repair torn ligaments in his right ankle.

Zebrav, ranked third in the world, was injured during the second set of his game against the one who eventually won the tournament, the Spaniard Rafael Nadal.

"To return to competition as quickly as possible, to ensure a proper recovery, and to restore full stability to my ankle, surgery was the best choice," Zebrav wrote in an Instagram post.

The 25-year-old German tennis player said he underwent surgery in Germany on Tuesday morning after receiving confirmation that "all three side ligaments in my right ankle have been torn", but did not specify when he is expected to return to play.

Zebrav was injured while chasing a ball at the end of the second set against Nadal last Friday, contracted to the ground, grabbed his right ankle and howled in agony.

He was taken off the field in a wheelchair, then repeated on crutches to announce he was retiring from the game.

Zebrav was a runner-up at the 2020 United States Open and won a gold medal in the singles at the Tokyo Olympics last year.
