Dates, staggered schedule, rising amounts: five questions about the 2022 summer transfer window

2022-06-09T04:29:29.320Z

The 2022 edition of the summer football transfer window opens its doors on June 10. Its dizzying numbers should approach those of the pre-Covid era.

What are the transfer window dates?

Not all European countries work the same way.

Ligue 1 and the Premier League are aligned: the transfer window opens on June 10 and closes on September 1, 2022. Small difference for the three other major leagues on the continent, namely Serie A, La Liga and the Bundesliga, which do not will only open their transfer window on July 1.

In reality, it doesn't change much.

When it comes to the dates, it is especially necessary to have in mind those of later closing in other countries.

In Turkey, clubs will be able to recruit until September 8.

In Portugal, Benfica or Porto can hire until September 22.

It is therefore not impossible for players to leave Ligue 1 once the French transfer window is closed.

Why won't the transfer window close at midnight?

As we know, many transfers only materialize in the last hours of the transfer window.

Hence the initiative of the LFP to close it on Thursday September 1, 2022 at 11 p.m. and not at midnight “

for the sending of contracts

” to the League.

In other words, the LFP grants almost an extra day for the paperwork to be settled.

This new schedule will allow clubs to finalize their international transfers more serenely on the FIFA TMS application, the closing time of which remains midnight

,” said the body in a press release.

This will be valid for Ligue 1 and Ligue 2.

Is the crisis still impacting transfers?

More really.

The International Center for Sports Studies (CIES) had estimated at 5.8 billion euros the expenditure on transfer compensation by the clubs of the 5 major European championships in the summer of 2019. A record.

The following summer, marked by the crisis and the Covid-19, brought the bill down to 3.486 billion.

Then in the summer of 2021, it was already up to 3.513 billion.

This summer, the increase should be accentuated.

Just look at the last winter transfer window, where spending in the five major European championships exceeded €660m, more than double the 2021 winter market (309).

In addition, “

the pandemic has reinforced the domination of Premier League clubs on the transfer market,

underlined the CIES.

The share of the latter's expenses in relation to the total investments of the Big 5 teams rose from around 36% between January 2012 and January 2020 to more than 45% during the three transfer windows that took place after the start of the health crisis.

More generally, the CIES notes a "

trend towards a concentration of spending on the part of the richest clubs

".

Are there any transfers already recorded?

Yes.

Manchester City hit hard on May 10 by announcing an agreement in principle with Borussia Dortmund for Erling Haaland.

It's only a matter of time before the Norwegian striker (21) takes his first photos with the Skyblues shirt.

PSG has already extended Kylian Mbappé, its most burning file, and exercised the option to buy Nuno Mendes, on loan from Sporting Portugal.

Ivan Perisic moves from Inter Milan to Tottenham.

Thomas Delaine, he does not follow Metz in Ligue 2 and has signed up with Strasbourg.

As for Boubacar Kamara, he did not extend to Marseille to join Aston Villa.

Which players will make the headlines this summer?
