The high jumper Jonathan Kapitolnik, made history today (Thursday) when he became the first Israeli athlete to participate in the prestigious Diamond League, which was held this time in Rome, when he finished in seventh place.
The 19-year-old Kapitolnik opened the competition at an initial height of 2.10 meters, when perhaps from the excitement of the class, he passed it only in the second attempt, when the continuum rose to 2.15 and 2.20 meters, the Israeli passed successfully in the first attempt, when two competitors were eliminated at this stage .
The next height was 2.24 meters, but there the young Israeli athlete had a hard time and failed in all three of his attempts, finishing seventh.
In the first place, the American Javanese Harrison finished with 2.27 meters, while the Olympic champion from Tokyo - the Italian Gianmarco Tambri was ranked only third with 2.24 meters in the second attempt.
Capitolnik came to the competition, after achieving the world result of the year in early May, after setting the criteria for the European Championships in Munich when he jumped to a height of 2.30 meters, in the Maccabi Israel Championship competition named after the Idelson brothers held in Hadar Yosef.
Since the start of the project in 2010, only four Israeli athletes have participated: the high jumper Daniel Frenkel, the javelin thrower Margarita Dorozhon who achieved the gold in Oslo in 2015 with an Israeli record, Luna Chamtai Salpter in the 3000 and time trial, and the triple jumper Hannah Knyazeva Minenko who won the silver medal in Paris 2013.
