The game should have taken place as a "ghost game" with no spectators, but a loophole in the regulations allowed fans to accompany children into the stadium.

During the prostration, which the English regularly commit to fight racism, the audience began whistling at the players.

After a temporary deficit, Leon Goretzka saved the team from being eliminated in the group stage and scored the equalizer shortly before the end - including provocative heartfelt celebrations towards the Hungary fans.
