Why the 24 Hours of Le Mans remains the most prestigious race in the world

STORY - The mythical Endurance event, almost a century old, retains an intact prestige in France and around the world.

The start of the 90 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans will be given on Saturday at 4 p.m. (live on the L'Équipe and Eurosport channels, with live commentary on figaro.fr) with an expected duel between Toyota, big favorite, and Alpine .

After two editions hampered by health constraints, the famous race returns to its traditional format and the mass return of the public.

Between 220,000 and 250,000 spectators are expected for this almost century-old race (in 2023) which has overcome all crises.

A myth followed by approximately 110 million viewers in 190 countries.

• A circuit of excess

Le Mans is first and foremost an iconic circuit, one of the most prestigious in the world, with an exceptional length: 13.626 km.

A route as singular as it is ephemeral since its lifespan is limited to one big week per year, the time of the event.

It consists of part of the Bugatti circuit and portions of public roads reopened to traffic just a few hours after the end of the race…
