The German national team is still waiting for its first victory in the Nations League. Against Hungary, the DFB-Elf offered a poor performance over long stretches. The spirit of optimism under Hansi Flick is gone for now.

The German national soccer team did not get beyond a 1-1 draw in the third game of the Nations League.

As in Italy and against England, the DFB team only shared a point in Hungary.

Hansi Flick's team put in a disappointing performance, especially in the second half.

Flick did without Thomas Müller and Antonio Rüdiger in the starting XI this time to give them a break.

Instead, Thilo Kehrer and Leon Goretzka slipped back into the starting line-up - Goretzka, who caused a sensation when the two teams last met at the European Championship last year with his demonstrative heartfelt celebration in the direction of the Hungarian Ultras.

Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck formed the central defence, both will be teammates in BVB's defense in the future.

In contrast to the England game, the German team did not kneel at the start.

The English were heavily booed by the audience for the gesture at their game in Hungary last week.

The game started furiously, after just eight minutes two goals had been scored - one on each side.

And in both cases Schlotterbeck played a crucial role.

At first he let his opponent head free in the center of defence, Manuel Neuer could only five five and Zsolt Nagy shot in to make it 1-0.

Almost as a countermove, Schlotterbeck hit a long, deliberate ball into the attack, Jonas Hofmann had thought along, picked up the pass, played it past goalkeeper Peter Gulasci and pushed in to equalize.

After that, the game remained intense, the German team attacked early in the classic flick manner and thus provoked danger, on the other hand the hosts repeatedly caused unrest in the German defense with long and fast passes, which the recently highly praised David Raum saw not always sovereign on the defensive.

The DFB-Elf didn't create any great chances until the change of sides, but the Hungarians had them shortly before the break when Manuel Neuer saved with his foot against Attila Fiola, who took a shot from close range.

The draw went into the break.

The German team came out of the dressing room powerfully and increased the pace.

However, more than a few corner kicks didn't come around at first, and the momentum was quickly gone again.

Only after 70 minutes – Flick had meanwhile brought İlkay Gündoğan into the game for Leon Goretzka – did the great opportunity to take the lead suddenly open up.

Hofmann ran freely towards goal, but instead of completing the shot, he tried to serve Timo Werner, which was thwarted by a Hungarian defender.

In the final phase, Flick tried to set the ball rolling again by substituting Thomas Müller, Lukas Nmecha, Karim Adeyemi and Julian Brandt, but that didn't work either.

In the end, the team once again had to thank Neuer, who reacted well several times in the closing stages.
