The rape case allegedly committed by Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has been closed by a court in Nevada, according to reports in the United States today (Saturday).
Complainant Catherine Mayorga sued the footballer and demanded that he pay her millions of dollars in compensation, claiming that he raped her in Las Vegas in 2009, and that she allegedly paid her $ 375,000 as silence fees.
District Judge Jennifer Dorsey closed the case yesterday to punish the woman's lawyer, Leslie Mark Stubble, for misconduct and use of stolen confidential documents that she claimed had tarnished the legal process.
In the ruling, the judge outright dismissed the lawsuit, with no possibility of re-filing, saying that the complainant's lawyer's conduct harmed the footballer: "Their confidential content was woven into the fabric of the plaintiff's claims and severe sanctions are needed against the staff representing her."
Ronaldo's defense team does not disagree that the two had sex, but claim that it was not a rape but that the act was consensual and that the confidentiality agreement signed between the parties prevented them from talking about the incident.
