Iris Schmidbauer was part of the Red Bull Cliff Diving in Boston.

The staker took a leap that she had been working towards for a long time.

Boston – Iris Schmidbauer forms a heart with both hands and briefly points the symbol towards the audience.

There is no more show from the 27-year-old.

Some other athletes are more excited on a 20 meter high platform above the Boston harbor waters.

Rather, Schmidbauer concentrates on her fourth, the final jump.

She briefly stops moving towards the edge of the platform, breathes deeply, collects herself.

A backwards jump triple somersault with two twists isn't trivial either.

The 27-year-old from Pähl manages the jump, which is in the upper range of the scale with a difficulty of 4.3.

When she emerges from the water, Schmidbauer jubilantly – and relieved – stretches his right arm in the air.

Iris Schmidbauer takes eighth place at Cliff Diving in Boston

Iris Schmidbauer described her performance at the start of the “Red Bull Cliff Diving” season as a “solid start”.

For the first time in nine years, the cliff divers made a stop in Boston.

Among twelve participants, she was the only German to take eighth place.

She also moved in these areas last year when she was a permanent starter in the worldwide series.

This year Schmidbauer is a so-called wildcard starter.

By the way: everything from the region is also available in our regular Schongau newsletter.

And in our Weilheim-Penzberg newsletter.

She was happy and proud that she showed a jump from a handstand for the first time in a competition in Boston.

"I've dreamed of this for so long and I'm glad that I finally completed it." Jumps from 20 meters and higher are physically and mentally very demanding, the athletes can't do them every day.

The jumps are broken down into individual parts, so to speak, and the parts are trained from lower heights.

However, it is also the case that there is still no 20-meter platform in Germany.

Schmidbauer hasn't done any high dives for a long time before Boston.

"You have to get over yourself to jump down there," she said in an interview on the sidelines of the competition in the USA.

As far as the coaching environment and the financial situation are concerned, the Pähler is “a bit of a lone fighter”.

At the same time, she was “super happy to be here.

It's really an honour." Schmidbauer hopes that she will soon have the opportunity to train more from 20 meters "so that I can improve".

The 27-year-old is ambitious.

She would like, she emphasized, to work on the details again in the future instead of paying particular attention to "surviving" the jump, as she puts it.

The jumpers are in the air for three seconds and dive at up to 85 km/h.

In water, they slow down in less than a second - so it is necessary to have properly trained muscles.

At the next stop of the series, on June 18th in Paris, Schmidbauer will not be there as things stand.

Schmidbauer certainly has a wild card for the competition in Oslo (August 13).
