How far will the fall go?
On the ground, the Girondins de Bordeaux had a calamitous 2021-2022 season in the top flight to the point of finishing dead last in the championship.
Hello Ligue 2. And maybe worse.
Because the DNCG, the financial control body for professional football clubs, pronounced this Tuesday the demotion of the club to National 1.
The Bordeaux president, Gérard Lopez, came in person for a hearing which took place at the headquarters of the Professional Football League (LFP) in Paris.
He was accompanied by his lawyer Laurent Cotret, his strategic adviser James Stevens and Thomas Jacquemier the general manager of the FCGB, to present the state of the accounts and the prospects for the future season in L 2.
Faced with this snub, the leaders of Bordeaux have seven days to go back to an appeal committee and provide the guarantees requested for the continuation of the exercise in L 2. If they cannot accede to the requests of the DNCG, the Bordeaux residents risk having to file for bankruptcy... and go back to National 3.
Last year, Bordeaux was demoted from L 1 to L 2 on July 2, then kept in the top flight by the DNCG appeal committee on July 12.
