Former boxer Julius Francis confronts man rioting (Twitter)

A horrific incident at a football game in the lower leagues in El Salvador: Referee Jose Arnoldo Amaya passed away this week, after being attacked with severe violence by players and fans on the pitch and abandoned when in critical condition.

The incident began when the 63-year-old mother, a veteran referee in the lower leagues and amateur leagues of El Salvador, pulled out a red card towards one of the players.

The dismissed player, who picked up a second yellow after a foul on an opposing player, reacted wildly and began beating Amaya mercilessly, with some of his teammates joining him, and soon dozens of fans burst onto the pitch and become accomplices to the crime.

In photos that documented the shocking moments, Amaya is seen surrounded by dozens of people beating him and kicking him with tremendous force even when he is lying on the ground.

At one point Amaya is seen on the run, until he is recaptured by the ruthless rioters.

Amaya was left lying on the lawn unconscious, with the attackers fleeing the scene quickly.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital with severe internal bleeding in the brainstem, and less than 48 hours later doctors were forced to determine his death.

The condemnations across the country that have been dealing for years with severe violence on the pitches, were not long in coming.

The local association issued a condolence message to the family, noting that it "condemns, regrets and hurts the murderous and inhuman attack. As the body responsible for local football, we condemn any kind of violence in the industry and pray that Jose is the last victim."

Last night a key suspect in the attack was arrested, a criminal well known to the police, who was one of the fans who broke into the pitch and caused the incident to escalate.

A search of his home turned up large amounts of marijuana and cocaine, as well as large sums of money.

"Unfortunately, gangs of criminals, terrorists who are thirsty for blood and death are coming to the pitches. We must do everything we can to defeat them in this war," said Gustavo Vieturo, the Minister of Internal Security.
