There was a lot of activity at the Seeshaupt Yacht Club recently.

The "Pentecost Youth Week" took place for the 30th time.

Later world championship medal winners took part in it.

Seeshaupt – Some maneuverability is also required for a turn.

"And now down through like a cat," says Ilka Kenter.

Her protégé skilfully climbs from port to starboard and literally dives under the sail, which swings back and forth in the middle.

The trainer lifts the Opti, which is placed on a wheel axle, at the bow so that the boat is as level as it will be later on the water.

"Very well done", Ilka Kenter praises the sailing newcomer.

After the boy, it is a girl's turn who completes the action just as safely.

The newcomers to the "Pentecost Youth Week" organized by the Seeshaupt Yacht Club (YCSS) first complete various maneuvers on land before setting sail.

But most of the action takes place on the water.

One boat at a time is launched down the ramp that slopes downwards.

Some children steer their Opti boats out onto Lake Starnberg themselves and are not pulled by the motor boat.

And it turns out that it can be quite tricky to sail in the rather narrow channel between the yachts lying at anchor.

For the more experienced youngsters with their Laser and 29er boats, the trip out onto the lake looks childishly easy.

YCSS Whitsun Youth Week was first held in 1993

This year, 47 children and young people between the ages of six and 17 are taking part in what is now the 30th edition of the “Pentecost Youth Week”.

Nine young sailors who already have regatta experience train in parallel on the Achensee in the five days between Sunday and Thursday.

The area there "is more windproof," says Walter von Schorlemer.

The youth leader is experiencing his 23rd "Whitsun Youth Week", which traditionally always takes place in the second half of the Whitsun holidays.

It all started in 1993, at that time under youth director Christian Henkel.

The purpose of the campaign is to get children excited about sailing and ultimately also to recruit new members.

Those who already have certain skills receive special additional training.

The participants will be divided accordingly.

This year there are three groups for the Optimist alone: beginners, advanced and regatta.

There are also the boat classes Laser and 29er.

There is a program every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., food and drinks are included – as well as a T-shirt and a certificate at the end.

A trainer always takes care of about five sailors.

"We make sure that the groups are small," says von Schorlemer.

And something else is important to him: the kids “should have fun sailing”.

The atmosphere when the boats leave the port is concentrated but also relaxed.

Von Schorlemer in particular always has a funny comment in store - and lends a hand when it comes to launching the youngest ones.

Youth work is a central part of the life of the Seeshaupt Yacht Club.

With around 370 members, “we are a medium-sized club,” says von Schorlemer.

75 of them are children and young people.

A total of 15 trainers take care of them.

Many of them can refer to participation in the Bundesliga and starts at the European and World Cups.

"The coaching team is great," emphasizes von Schorlemer.

The work of those responsible has also been favorably registered with the Bavarian Sailing Association.

The YCSS has received the BSV Youth Promotion Award twice already, in 2006 and 2020.

Seeshaupt Opti price

The “Seeshaupter Opti Prize” will take place on Saturday, June 18th and Sunday, June 19th.

The organizer is the YCSS.

Almost 70 young sailors from all over Bavaria have registered.

Ready to run out for the first race is on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Five races are planned.

For the training week during the Pentecost holidays, the yacht club also uses equipment (such as inflatable boats for accompaniment) and trainers from the neighboring Seeshaupter clubs.

"We work well together with the other clubs," says the YCSS youth leader.

Mutual support at events is the rule, the relationship among each other is collegial.

Good cooperation between the Seeshaupt sailing clubs

The "Pentecost Youth Week" is just one of several dates for the next generation in the yacht club's calendar.

At Easter and in autumn, a large number of people regularly go to Lake Garda.

This April, nine training groups with over 30 young sailors went to Italy.

There were also guests from other Bavarian clubs.

The yacht club youngsters are also active in regattas.

On the five weekends in May alone, 54 participants were recorded, with top places to be celebrated.

This year, the kids were given a particularly impressive demonstration of what such participation in the “Pentecost Youth Week” can lead to.

YCSS sailor Florian Krauß stopped by on the first day.

He took part in the event in 2012, last year he won the world title in the 420 at the title fights in Oman with Jannis Sümmchen (Chiemsee Yacht Club).

Krauss brought the trophy with him, he was in the clubhouse during the youth week.

Florian Krauss won the 420 World Championship in 2021

Nils Sternbeck, the son of the 2nd YCSS chairman Oliver Sternbeck, has a similar success story to show: He took part in the youth week in 2010, three years later he became vice world champion in Optimum at the competitions on Lake Garda.

The "Pentecost Youth Week" - definitely a stepping stone to great success.
