Verstappen steps up the pressure

Not everything was easy for the reigning world champion on Sunday in Canada, especially during the last fifteen laps when Carlos Sainz gave everything to clinch his first victory.

But the Dutchman has strong backs.

He held on under pressure to offer himself a sixth success this season, the 26th of his young career and in the standings, the shot is perfect.

With 175 units on the clock, Max Verstappen has a 46-point lead over Sergio Perez, forced to retire (see below), and 49 over Charles Leclerc.

Mercedes is getting closer

As in Baku, the Silver Arrows were solid in Montreal.

Third, Lewis Hamilton won his second podium of the season after that of Bahrain at the start of the season.

The seven-time world champion was happy after the race.

Fourth, George Russell, who started eighth, still brings big points to Mercedes.

A good omen a fortnight from Silverstone where the two British drivers will be expected.

Sainz tried everything, the rise of Leclerc

Rather satisfying weekend for Ferrari in Canada.

Third on the grid, Carlos Sainz tried everything but came up against an imperial Max Verstappen in Montreal and the Spaniard settled for a solid second place.

Concerning Charles Leclerc, who started 19th following penalties for a change of engine and other parts, he finished fifth.

A great performance from the Monegasque.

In the end, Ferrari pocketed 29 points in Canada, four more than Red Bull.

Alpine and Alfa Romeo in the game

“We were solid,”

says Esteban Ocon.

Indeed, Alpine had a great weekend on Ile-Notre-Dame with sixth place for Esteban Ocon and seventh for Fernando Alonso.

Second on the grid, the Spaniard was disappointed at the finish because from lap 20 he suffered engine cuts which caused him to lose four to five tenths per lap.

But with 14 points collected, Alpine signs its best weekend of the season.

Another good shot-group, that of Alfa Romeo with the eighth position of Valtteri Bottas and the ninth of Guanyu Zhou who signs his best result in F1.

FLOPS

Gasly passed by

After five races without a point, the Frenchman had put an end to this series in Baku with his fifth place.

The Alpha Tauri pilot then arrived with ambitions in Montreal.

Ambitions quickly cooled after his 16th place in qualifying.

A big disappointment like his anonymous race on Sunday, with a modest fourteenth place finish.

Pierre Gasly is struggling with his Alpha Tauri this season with only one top 10 in the last seven races.

A difficult weekend for Perez

He was the driver of the moment since his success in Monaco.

So much so that the Mexican was propelled as a potential title contender.

But the Canadian weekend did not go as planned.

Sergio Perez made a mistake in Q2 on Saturday which greatly complicated his race.

Starting 13th, the number 2 of Red Bull attacked at the start of the race but quickly retired on lap 9 following a gearbox problem.

A weekend to forget for the ex-Force India driver.

Mclaren, zero points

"Nothing worked"

, these words are those of Lando Norris at the end of the race.

That sums up McLaren's weekend in Quebec perfectly.

Lando Norris (15th) and Daniel Ricciardo (11th) did not shine in Montreal because of a very perfectible car and shaky strategies.

On arrival, the result is relentless: zero points.

This puts Alpine within four points of fourth place in the constructors held by McLaren.
