Max Verstappen has further extended his World Championship lead in Formula 1.

The Dutchman in the Red Bull won the Canadian Grand Prix ahead of Carlos Sainz in a Ferrari and Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton.

For world champion Verstappen, the triumph in Montréal was the sixth win of the season in the ninth race.

The 24-year-old now has 175 championship points.

For a long time it looked like an unchallenged victory for Verstappen, but with a deployment of the safety car, Sainz came within striking distance again.

Verstappen had to fight - and he succeeded.

Sebastian Vettel just missed the points.

With a protest against Canada's climate policy, the German had attracted some attention around the Grand Prix, now the Aston Martin driver drove in twelfth place.

Mick Schumacher finished qualifying in sixth place on Saturday – it was the best qualifying of his career.

The race should go worse for him.

Due to a technical defect, he had to park his Haas after 19 laps.

"It's an unpleasant feeling, we had the pace," said the 23-year-old on Sky.

Peréz with bad luck, Leclerc with frustration, then the safety car comes

Sergio Peréz had already retired before the German.

Verstappen's teammate, who was second in the drivers' standings before the race, retired on the ninth lap due to technical problems.

Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, who was stuck behind Esteban Ocon for a long time, was also dissatisfied during the race.

Leclerc complained to his team about the performance of his car via radio.

He reached the finish in fifth place.

On the 50th lap, the safety car had to be deployed after Yuki Tsunoda drove into the barrier immediately after a pit stop.

Sainz was lucky with the scene: he had just driven into the pits for his second stop, after which he came back onto the track directly behind Verstappen.

The safety car disappeared five laps later – and the Red Bull driver was able to defend his leading position.

But the race wasn't as clear as it was at the beginning.

Sainz stayed close to Verstappen, but the Ferrari driver no longer attempted a real overtaking maneuver.
