According to team boss Toto Wolff, the fight for the Formula 1 title is not an issue for Mercedes, even after the strong performance of the Silver Arrow duo in Canada.
Montréal - "The train left a long time ago," he said.
But the goal is to win races.
"And I think we can do that," emphasized Wolff.
Lewis Hamilton had previously finished third in the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday.
After finishing third at the season opener in Bahrain, it was only the second podium for the seven-time world champion this year.
George Russell finished fourth in Montréal.
Max Verstappen secured the race victory in the Red Bull ahead of Carlos Sainz in the Ferrari.
"We have to be happy.
We drove that out on the train.
That's okay," emphasized Mercedes team boss Wolff, but also said: "We have to be careful.
One swallow doesn't make a summer."
Mercedes catching up
However, the competition has already been warned.
"Mercedes has caught up massively," said Red Bulls motorsport consultant Helmut Marko on Sky.
“They looked strong, much stronger than before.
If they are constantly at the level, then they are up there in the fight," emphasized Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc after his fifth place.
At least the Hoppel problem of the Mercedes no longer seemed as extreme as it did in Baku when Hamilton had heaved himself out of his car in pain.
