Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt has strengthened its position with a prominent addition: Mario Götze has switched from Dutch runners-up PSV Eindhoven to the Europa League winner.
The 30-year-old winner of the 2014 World Cup final signed a three-year contract on Tuesday.
According to media reports, the fee for the attacking midfielder is only three to four million euros due to an exit clause in Götze's contract.
With the Götze transfer, the Frankfurters are pushing ahead with personnel planning for the first Champions League season in the club's history.
Earlier this summer, the club had signed seven players, including Jens Petter Hauge and Kristijan Jakić on loan previously, as well as striker Randal Kolo Muani, who appeared on a free transfer as a new starting XI option for FC Nantes after 12 goals in France's Ligue 1 attack had switched to the Main.
Eintracht finished the season in the Bundesliga in eleventh place, but then qualified for the premier class by winning the Europa League title.
Götze himself brings the experience of 62 Champions League appearances from his time at Borussia Dortmund (2010-2013, 2016-2020) and FC Bayern Munich (2013-2016).
Back to old strength in Eindhoven
Götze was also German champion twice with BVB and won the DFB Cup twice, while Bayern won three championships and two cups.
Götze made 63 appearances for the German national team, but the 2014 World Champion played his last international match in 2017.
After a protracted metabolic disease and weaker performances at the provisional end of his time in the Bundesliga, Götze moved to PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch Eredivisie in 2020 and was one of the regulars there.
In the past season, Götze played 52 games for the Dutchman in all competitions, scored twelve times and set up eleven goals.
