Europa League Final Summary: Eintracht Frankfurt - Rangers 1: 1 (4: 5 on penalties) (Sport 1)
An unusual story.
Austrian stopper Martin Hinterger, who just a month ago won with Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League and is only 29 years old, has decided to announce his retirement from football.
The reason for his retirement is still unclear, but Germany and Austria are wondering if it may be related to the fact that it was only a few weeks ago that he learned of alleged links with a far-right man who must have at least been associated with neo-Nazi organizations in the past.
Hinterger has won five Austrian championships, four trophies in Austria and only about a month ago he won with Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League.
He was absent from the final against Rangers and in the final rounds of the season in the German Bundesliga due to injury, but he started in most of the team's games this season and there seemed to be no reason why he would not continue in Eintracht next season.

This is how Hinterger explained his retirement in a statement: "I had thoughts about ending my career at the end of the season already at the beginning of autumn, because I could not maintain stability in all games. I celebrated winning the Europa League in a frenzy, because even then The crowd and with the club from the city that has become my second home, "said the Austrian, who arrived in Frankfurt in 2019 after also playing in Salzburg, and Russia Mönchengladbach and Augsburg.
Despite his remarks, Germany is wondering if his retirement does not come as a result of the affair that has made headlines in recent weeks.
Hinterger organized a tournament called "Hinty Cup" at his birthplace, Sternitz - after him, of course - but it was revealed that his tournament partner was Heinrich Shikel.
Schickel, also a native of Sternitz and probably known from there, was part of the Graz City Council of the Austrian National Freedom Party until 2021 and became famous following contacts and contacts he had with far-right members in the country - including movements marked as prohibited for use and advertising in Austria. "Extremist, racist, sexist, nationalist and ethnic-oriented right-wing organizations."
In his youth, during the 1990s, Shikel was also a member of the neo-Nazi National Front organization, which was outlawed as early as 1992.
Although Hinterger shunned the same accusations and allegations he made about Shikel, he claimed, among other things, that "it is unbelievable that an anonymous person could write such things about me - like Shikel, I am also a native of Sternitz and overall I wanted to express my appreciation and thank everyone who helped, supported and supported "I just want a football tournament, I have no idea about his past and any business relationship the family has with his family will end immediately," but one way or another he decided to hang up his shoes right now and did not hint at a possible retirement since the season ended about a month ago.
