As the Europa League winner announced on Thursday, Martin Hintergeer is retiring with immediate effect.
"I enjoyed the victory in the Europa League so much because I knew then that it would be my last big victory celebration with the fantastic fans in this city, which has become my second home," said Hinteregger in the club's announcement Football Bundesliga Clubs.
He had already thought about ending his career last fall.
The contract with Europa League winners Frankfurt, which was valid until June 2024, will be terminated.
Sport director Markus Krösche said: "Martin's decision came as a surprise to us, but he explained his perspective and reasons to us in an impressive and convincing manner.
So there was no question for us to comply with this sportingly painful but humanly understandable wish.”

Most recently, Hinteregger was criticized for his connection to FPÖ politician Heinrich Sickl.
The 29-year-old once again defended his contact with the FPÖ man and caused a shake of the head with a comparison.
"I know that he was a FPÖ politician, which isn't a bad thing in Austria.
But I didn't know anything about the identitarian movement and I didn't know what that meant either," Hinteregger told the
Standard
: "In Germany, many bring the FPÖ and AfD on the same level, but the AfD is ten times worse."
In terms of sport, Eintracht provided positive news with the commitment of World Cup hero Mario Götze.
However, these are now becoming somewhat clouded.
