Two become one: For decades there was the athletes' honor of the district and the athletes' choice of the Erdinger/Dorfener Anzeiger.

For the first time, the joint sports gala took place in the Erdinger Stadthalle.

Almost 400 guests attended.

The team ranking was won by the state league team FC Schwaig ahead of the Ü30 tennis women from Neuching and the B-soccer girls from FC Forstern.

There was a lot of applause for the active participants and a lot of praise for the new gala format.

It could be the beginning of a new institution.

Corona made it necessary: For the first time, athletes were awarded for the successes of two years - jointly by the district and Erdinger / Dorfener Anzeiger.

The siblings Amelie and Simon Zachenhuber win the title in the athletes' choice.

FC Schwaig is the team of the year.

Erding – Twelve-year-old Florian Brödel and his teammates from the Schwaiger Red Lions position themselves in front of the stage of the Erdinger Stadthalle and snap selfies.

Proud boys at the big sports gala: a souvenir photo.

"Huge adventure" for the boys, says department head Thomas Mann.

A few meters further on, Amelie Huber, who is a few years her senior, is sitting at one of the festively set tables in the crowded hall.

The young shooter from Germania Grucking finds the words for what is so enchanting that evening: "There are so many people here and everyone has achieved something for which they are celebrated by everyone else."

It is the sport that becomes an event, with all its components - diligence, work, success, solidarity and audience.

Equestrians applaud football players, swimmers bow to tennis players and soccer players pay tribute to figure skaters.

The event is a first.

It is the first time that the athletes' honor of the district of Erding and the athletes' choice of our newspaper are combined.

After two years, during which these formats had to be paused due to the pandemic, both parties have created something bigger together.

It's about time that "we do it again after years of abstinence," said District Administrator Martin Bayerstorfer at the welcome address.

"And that we do it cleverly." Editor-in-Chief Hans Moritz adds in his speech: "As far as I know, there isn't such a massive impact in sport in all of Upper Bavaria."

At the end of the evening he is back on stage.

The test by fire was passed.

The highest praise goes to sports director Dieter Priglmeir, who put a lot of heart and soul into setting up the event.

And to Maria Groß from the District Office, who - only briefly in office - made a great debut with the organization of the event.

Both the district and the Erdinger/Dorfener Anzeiger want to hold on to the "Erdinger Sportgala", Moritz promises.

In the almost three hours in between, editor Wolfgang Krzizok, as moderator, cheerfully guided through the awards.

Short one-player films told about the careers and recent successes of the athletes.

There were trophies not only for individual athletes, but also for teams - the soccer players from FC Schwaig, the over 30 tennis women from the Neuching game association and the U 17 soccer players from FC Forstern.

The district honored deserving functionaries with Michael Dörfler from KC Isen, Elisabeth Menzinger from the Icelandic Horse Friends Hammersdorf and Egon Brabenetz from KC Neufinsing.

In addition, successful participants in the Special Olympics were recognized by the St. Nicholas School.

Bayerstorfer proudly emphasized that the district was "extraordinarily strongly" committed to sport.

He also got personal and confessed that in his eyes the greatest sportsman of all time is the motor sportsman and four-time dirt track world champion Karl Maier from Neufinsing.

He followed the evening in the audience.

Krzizok chatted casually on stage with the honorees and not only pulled their next sporting goals out of their noses.

The almost 400 invited guests found out that the twelve-year-old swimmer Luis Hofmaier (third place in the readers' sportsman's choice) from Steinkirchen takes a taxi to training in Munich seven times a week and also plays football - "to compensate", like the three-time Bavarian champion confidently mentioned.

There were tips for the young swimmer from 65-year-old Vice World Champion Franz Herbst from Pemming, who was voted second by our readers.

Herbst prefers to count every single stroke he swims in the ice water, he said.

With his statement that a water temperature of 0.2 degrees feels “like summer” to him, he earned laughs from the audience.

"Swimming is one of the most intense sports," Herbst said.

"Anyone who can keep up the hard training is impressive." His young sports colleague should practice a lot of technique in his youth - and "above all, don't lose the fun".

A striking number of female swimmers were also in the favor of the readers among the women.

A young skier, Sophie Linsmayer from Dorfen, did end up in third place - she said that her grandfather "put her on skis as soon as I could stand".

As a 16-year-old, she drove faster than all adults at the district championships.

Competition, she admits, comes from her own family: her younger sister Hanna.

However, women swimmers took first place: Anna Herbst, the 22-year-old daughter of the Pemmering icebreaker, finished second, like her father.

She talked about her studies in Palm Beach, Florida, where she once defeated a US world record holder.

Goldfish Amelie Zachenhuber once again won the women's athletes' choice.

In conversation with Krzizok on stage, the woman from Eisen spoke freely about her epilepsy, which has severely affected her training in recent months.

Now she will move back home from Erlangen and then "really attack again" in sport, she announced combatively.

The audience appreciated her openness and courageous attitude with extra applause.

That too is sportsmanship.

A Zachenhuber also tops the list of men: Amelie's brother Simon won the title "Sportsman of the Year".

Because of the upcoming competition on July 2nd in Erding, the professional boxer could not be there in person, but sent video greetings – like some others.

In it he admitted that this title had been a small dream of his for a long time.

"I've stalked my way a few times, but it's never been quite enough." And Simon Zachenhuber also sent motivating words to the other athletes in the town hall: "You just have to stick with it and wait long enough, then you'll make it too!"
