The Israelis at Wimbledon: Only memories remain of the green grass Israel today

2022-06-26T05:31:11.669Z

In the tournament in England that started today, no Israeli tennis player will participate for the first time since 1997 • Dudi Sela lost to Djokovic • Yoni Erlich was the last to step on the grass in London • And who is the Israeli who lifted the trophy?

It's no secret that Israeli tennis has been in continuous decline for several years, but at the upcoming Wimbledon the secret is already completely visible when for the first time since 1997, no Israeli will take part in the tournament.

In his final year in the round and as he prepares for an expected retirement, Dudi Sela tried to enter the tournament probably for the last time in his career, but was defeated already in the first qualifying round.

He will probably not forget his last time on the British turf, after meeting Rafael Nadal in the first round in 2018.

It's over as it sounds.

Last year it was Yoni Ehrlich, the veteran doubles player (45), who collaborated with Belarusian Andrei Vasilevsky.

Unfortunately, for the opening game they got the top scorers then, the Croats Nikola Mekic and Mata Fabic, who had no trouble ousting Ehrlich and his partner - all the way to the trophy lifting.

Overall, Israeli tennis has achieved very good results over the years at Wimbledon.

The national resume includes Amos Mansdorf (1989), Dudi Sela (2009) and Shachar Peer (2008), who reached the eighth, and Ehrlich, who was arrested twice in the semifinals (2003 with Andy Ram, and 2015 with Philip Petzner).

And yes, there was a trophy too.

It happened in 2006, so Andy Ram collaborated with the Russian Vera Zvonareva and together with her made an amazing journey that ended in celebrations.

In doing so, Ram became the first Israeli to win a Grand Slam title, with the second and third time also recorded in his name.

Right now, the big hopes are Lina Glushko (272) and Yishai Uliel (346) who have yet to reach the Grand Slam qualifiers.
