American Sydney McLaughlin broke the world record she held • by breaking her record at the Tokyo Olympics last year by five hundredths • "Eating some real food, cheeseburgers or pancakes"


The athletics season is heating up.

Olympic champion Sydney McLaughlin broke the world record she held last night (Saturday through Sunday), in the 400-meter hurdles at the United States Championships. 

 The 22-year-old McLaughlin crossed the finish line in 51.41 seconds, thus improving on her record at the Tokyo Olympics last year by five hundredths.

She waited for the official time and then allowed herself to smile and lift thumbs up.

 "I was getting ready for the championship, so what are you expecting?" Said the freshman. "Every time I come here I can just feel like something amazing is going to happen." When asked how she was going to celebrate, McLaughlin joked: "Eat some real food besides vegetables.

Like a cheeseburger or some pancakes. " 

 The top three places at each event at the National Championships, represented the United States at the World Championships, also in Eugene, Oregon next month.

This is the first time that the largest athletics event will be held on American soil.

 McLaughlin has yet to win a world title, having finished second in the last championship in Qatar in 2019, and now in front of the home crowd will want to make the leap to the podium.
