Wimbledon: the barometer of the Blues

2022-06-26T06:19:31.333Z

Deprived, as at Roland-Garros, of its leader Gaël Monfils, the blue colony displays limited ambitions for the British Grand Slam. A Frenchman or a Frenchwoman in the 3rd round would already be a nice surprise. Workforce review.

Ten Frenchmen and eight Frenchwomen are involved in the two main draws.

No Habs being seeded in London, as at Roland-Garros - a first since 1999 - it will take small miracles to have representatives in the second week at Church Road.

The only certainty: there will be at least one in the second round in the men's draw – since Benoît Paire and Quentin Halys will fight it out straight away.

However, the recent performances on the grass of Caroline Garcia or Benjamin Bonzi give hope (a little).

  • Wimbledon: ladies schedule and results

Rising

Caroline Garcia

Opposed to the British guest of Japanese origin Yoriko Miyazaki in the first round, Caroline Garcia should have a smooth entry against the 206th in the world.

The Lyonnaise finds color on the grass after very difficult months, marred by injuries and big doubts.

Winner of Bad Homburg, just before Wimbledon, the 75th in the world won her first title since Nottingham in 2019, already on grass.

The lights seem (finally) to green for the former world number 4.

Benjamin Bonzi

The Nîmes should have an affordable first round against the Czech Zdenek Kolar, eliminated in the last round of qualifying but drafted.

Semi-finalist in Majorca, quarter-finalist in Stuttgart, Bonzi, guaranteed to enter the Top 50 next week, is the most successful Frenchman at the moment.

At 26, he will attempt to reach his first Grand Slam third round.

In the event of victory against Kolar, the Gardois have a shot to play against, possibly, the seeded number 29 Brooksby before potentially rubbing shoulders with Matteo Berrettini, one of the great favorites of the London tournament.

Another story…

Enzo Couacaud

At 27, Enzo Couacaud has offered himself a first.

On his 17th attempt and eight years after his first try, Enzo Couacaud finally managed to get out of qualifying for a Grand Slam tournament.

The 207th player in the world thus dominated the Bulgarian Dimitar Kuzmanov, 175th at the ATP, in four sets (6-2, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2) in 2h41 in Roehampton.

He is the only tricolor to have pulled out of qualifying (even if Hugo Grenier was fished out).

But the adventure could quickly end for the native of Mauritius, since it is the formidable server John Isner, 20th in the world, who comes face to face with him.

Steady

Alize Cornet

The 32-year-old remains the best tricolor in the world rankings.

But she was not spoiled by the draw since she will have to dominate the seeded 27 Yulia Putintseva from the start... The Niçoise arrives in London with some certainties.

Beaten in the first round in Berlin, she failed on the wire in Baad Homburg against her compatriot Caroline Garcia in the semi-finals.

Enough to hope to distinguish herself for her 62nd consecutive Grand Slam (series started at the 2007 Australian Open), where she will equal the record of the Japanese Ai Sugiyama.

Hugo Gaston

More comfortable on earth than on grass, the left-hander still reached the quarters in 's-Hertogenbosch, before being slapped by Briton Liam Broady in the first round of Eastbourne.

Faced with the giant Alexei Popyrin, the Toulousain, in search of a little more regularity, will not leave with the favors of the forecasts.

In the event of qualification in the 2nd round, it is the Italian Sonego who could be on the program then a certain Rafael Nadal in the third round…

Adrian Mannarino

Uncomfortable on earth, Adrian Mannarino almost always has a green thumb.

Three times 8th runner-up at Wimbledon, the 70th in the world remains perhaps the best hexagonal chance even if he is in the table part of the serious outsider Hubert Hurkacz, whom he would meet in the 3rd round.

Semi-finalist in Bois-le-Duc, where he was defending champion, Val d'Oisien then disappointed in Eastbourne where he was beaten in two sets by Daniel Evans (6-4, 6-3).

He must therefore ensure and reassure himself for his entry into the running, a priori affordable, against the Australian Max Purcell, from the qualifications.

Falling

Ugo Humbert

Nothing is going well for the 8th finalist of the 2019 edition. Leaving the Top 100 on Monday for the first time in three and a half years, Ugo Humbert has not yet greened up on his favorite surface.

The winner of Halle 2021 remains on a sad defeat in the 1st round of the English ATP 250 against Thiago Monteiro, 94th in the world and from qualifying (6-7, 6-3, 6-4).

The Messin has a terrible record of 16 defeats for 5 small victories this season.

And on grass, he also lost in 8th in Halle and in the 1st round in Stuttgart.

Opposed to the Argentinian Etcheverry, 79th in the world and clay court specialist, Humbert has the opportunity to offer himself, already a slight thinning.

Arthur Rinderknech

Injured for a good part of the spring, one of the main revelations of 2021 in French tennis has regained some confidence after a title in Poznan (challenger), on clay.

But he didn't really have a green thumb afterwards.

With only one victory in three preparatory tournaments (against Humbert in Stuttgart).

The former university in the US, however, has all the weapons to shine on grass.

Not spoiled in appearance by the draw – he faces the semi-finalist of the last edition Denis Shapovalov (seed 13) from the start. The adopted Breton however has the means to surprise, especially since his opponent remains on six consecutive defeats in the first round…

Benoit Pair

From bad to worse… On June 6, after another defeat during the tournament on the grass in Stuttgart, Benoît Paire announced that he was putting his career on hold for an indefinite period.

A break that lasted barely 10 days.

We then found the Avignonnais in a challenger on… clay in Milan where he gave up after losing the first set.

At Roland-Garros, he had warned that he would come to collect his check at Wimbledon, where he will face his compatriot Quentin Halys in the first round.

At least 50,000 euros are insured for the loser…
