Uli Hoeneß recently called for the 50+1 rule in professional football to be lifted.

Dortmund boss Hans-Joachim Watzke considers this idea to be gross nonsense.

Dortmund – The 50+1 rule is stubborn in Germany.

While in other major football leagues investors have long been able to take over entire football clubs, the following applies in the Bundesliga: the majority of the shares in a club must always be in the hands of the members.

The concern that German football could be left behind in the long term is not new.

For years there have been calls for the abolition of the principle.

Most recently, Uli Hoeneß opened this barrel again.

50+1 rule: Watzke counters Hoeneß

"If the Bundesliga - this does not apply to Bayern Munich - does not think about abolishing the 50+1 rule, we will have major problems in being able to keep up internationally in the long term," said FC Bayern's honorary president in an interview with

Hoeneß had already had to take a lot from fans for this statement.

Now Hans-Joachim Watzke also reacted to it.

It is not surprising that the BVB boss has a fundamentally different opinion.

“It is no longer necessary to discuss 50+1.

Because there will be no change in Germany in the next few years under my responsibility as head of the DFL supervisory board.

That's 100% certain," he said in the

, before he counterattacked.

Watzke shoots against Hoeneß: "The greatest nonsense"

"The fascinating thing about Uli Hoeneß' argument is that he suggests something to other clubs, but then explicitly excludes FC Bayern," said Watzke.

"The greatest nonsense is to say that you can't be successful at 50+1." He sees evidence in this year's successes of Real Madrid and Eintracht Frankfurt, both 50+1 clubs.

"There are a number of international investor clubs that have not yet won the Champions League despite inexhaustible sources of money," argues Watzke.

Ironically, Sadio Mané's transfer to Bayern Munich tends to prove him right: the Bundesliga is still capable of attracting absolute top stars.

The question is: for how much longer?
