The German cycling team Bora-hansgrohe starts the 109th Tour de France with Nils Politt, Lennard Kämna and Maximilian Schachmann.

This was announced by team boss Ralph Denk in the team's podcast.

In addition to the German trio, the Austrians Felix Großschartner, Patrick Konrad and Marco Haller as well as the Russian Alexander Wlassow and the Dutchman Danny van Poppel were appointed.

For the Irish sprinter Sam Bennett, winner of the green jersey in 2020, there was surprisingly no place in the eight-rider squad.

The tour starts on Friday in Copenhagen with an individual time trial.

As captain, Wlasow should ensure a strong result in the overall standings.

“We hope for the podium, we want to drive offensively and aggressively.

A stage win would also be nice.

Then I'd be happy in Paris,' said Denk.

Wlasow, who was immensely strong this year, and Schachmann had only recently fallen ill with Covid-19, but apparently recovered quickly from it.

Above all, the new German champions Politt and Kämna should ensure stage wins.

Kämna already managed to do this in May at the Giro d'Italia, which Bora later surprisingly won with the Australian Jai Hindley.

The two stars Mark Cavendish and Julian Alaphilippe will not be on the tour.

Both the British record stage winner and France's world champion were missing from the QuickStep-AlphaVinyl team.

Instead, the Belgian team relies on the Dutch sprinter Fabio Jakobsen and is also hoping for stage victories by the Danish classics specialist Kasper Asgreen.

British Champion - and not nominated

Cavendish is only nominated as a replacement.

The 37-year-old had equaled Eddy Merckx's stage record last year and was actually hoping for his 35th day's success.

It was only on Sunday that he became British champion after a strong performance.

Now he can only be included in the squad due to a short-term illness or injury to a team-mate.

The team justified the waiver of Alaphilippe with a lack of form.

The 30-year-old had a bad fall near Liège-Bastogne-Liège in April and only recently returned to racing.
