Liles vs. Newton: The Next Big Battle of World Athletics | Israel today

2022-06-28T17:44:17.405Z

The final image of the 200-meter final in the American Tests has already become iconic: the finger of world champion Noah Liles was pointed at his American team-mate and second-place finisher, Arion Newton and despite all the denials - the rivalry between the two exists and burns • lines for her character

It was very important for Noah Liles to make it clear to whom he pointed the finger when he first crossed the finish line in the 200-meter final in the American Tests.

Although all the shooting angles suggest that the world champion's finger (which was in the shape of a gun) was pointed at whoever came in second, Arion Newton, Liles made it clear that the address was not his 18-year-old opponent.

"I did not point the finger at Arion," the 24-year-old sprinter wrote on Twitter;

"It's aimed at anyone who continues not to count me because a new player has entered the arena. Arion is a tremendous talent and has already proven it, but that does not mean I intend to lie and die."

Try to stop him,

Although Liles' words try to create the feeling that there is no rivalry here, the rivalry exists and is burning and the 200-meter final was her official opening shot.

Lyles reached this final as the 2019 world champion, as a bronze medalist Mario and as a 200-year-old who lost only twice in his professional career - in the Olympics and the Diamond League competition, while Arion Newton came in as the new meteor of American athletics.

He recently set a 19.49 seconds in a small run taken with a small camera and left a big effect.

At the age of 18, Newton became the world record holder for youth as he improved on Usain Bolt's record and the fourth fastest man in running history.

The time he set was faster than Lyles' personal best, and it was estimated that in the final of the American Tests for the World Championships to be held in Eugene Liles would record his third career loss and the 200th King's crown would officially move to Newton.

In the run itself, one of the things that creates this rivalry stood out - the clear style differences.

Newton detached from the ledges at record speed and after the first 100 meters and with the help of his control of the turn showed his back to all the other runners including Liles.

But after the bend and towards the last straight, the world champion presented his strength: the extension.

He opened steps, closing the gap and crossing the finish line with a result of 19.67 seconds.

Newton finished second in a time of 19.69 seconds, with third place finisher from the silver medalist from Tokyo in the 100-meter dash, Fred Carly, who stopped the clock in 19.83 seconds.

The final image in which Liles appears pointing to Newton has already become iconic, as have the concluding interviews given by the two.

"I did what I had to do to win," Liles said with record confidence;

"Arion was ahead of me at first, but it didn't bother me. I saw he was reaching his top speed and realized I was faster than him."

Newton, who was standing by his side during the interview, responded coldly;

"I'll come back to win. I'm not finished, it's never finished."

When he finished speaking, he quickly abandoned the interview.

These obvious differences in character and attitude also add to the growing rivalry, and it does not at all depend on what they say and where they point.

This rivalry between Liles and Newton is not classic.

They do not hate or attack each other, quite the contrary.

Both are from the new generation of American runners, both are represented by Adidas and there is a mutual paragon between them and lots of appreciation and respect.

The rivalry stems from the fact that both are tremendous talents who have achieved miraculous results and both aspire to first place in the present and perhaps even in the mirror of history.

The rivalry between them does not depend on anything, certainly not on words and announcements, but only on runs and results.

Knowing that they are going to share the track in the coming years and most likely also fight each other for first place is what produces the rivalry, fueled by gaps in running style, dress, behavior and speech.

Liles vs. Newton looks like the next big battle of world athletics, and now all that remains is to wait for the next episode to arrive in about three weeks: the World Championships.
