For Thibaut Pinot, the Tour de France has long stood out as an imposed figure approached with fear: too hot, too exposed, too painful, like his last participation.

That year, as part of a staggered edition due to Covid-19, the Grande Boucle left Nice at the end of August to experience its last summit just before autumn, in the Vosges garden of the leader of the Groupama-FDJ team, with a time trial on the Planche des Belles Filles.
The milder weather, the less crowded roads and the uneven route then seem cut out to perfectly suit a runner who has just finished, on the roads of Dauphiné, ahead of a promising youngster, the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar.
But the unexpected phenomenon of the "summer ice storm" throws the native of Lure to the ground from the first stage on the Promenade des Anglais.
