TV rights: Canal+ wins the day for the new Champions League

2022-06-29T19:27:20.404Z

The new format of the Champions League will be implemented in 2024 and Canal+ would have obtained the rights until 2027.

To discover the new Champions League, it will therefore be necessary to subscribe to Canal +.

According to information from L'Équipe, Maxime Saada, the president of Canal +, won his showdown against Amazon.

It was therefore his group that won the call for tenders for the broadcasting rights of the new Champions League, which will be increased from 32 to 36 teams.

Better, the encrypted channel has won all the lots, which will also allow it to broadcast the Europa League and the Europa League Conference, which also expand the formats by including even more teams.

Still according to the sports daily, Canal + won its bids by paying the modest sum of €370 million per season, which will go directly into UEFA's coffers.

The European authorities had decided to strike a blow to bring the boom to the famous and ephemeral Super League.

By increasing the number of participants, UEFA hopes to prevent any new firm league project.

In detail, lot A1 offers the best line-up for each competition Tuesday (17 matches per season) and summaries of the other matches of the evening.

Lot A2 (24 matches per edition) offers the best line-up for Wednesday and the summaries of the evening as well as that of the new Thursday evening organized during the first day, the final in paid broadcasting and the new inaugural tournament.

In lot B, Canal + obtained all the other matches in the competition (166 matches per season) and the Youth League.

Until now, BeIN Sports held the rights to this lot.

For Canal +, this victory is good for a competition which brings in the most audience (1.6 million viewers on average this season).

And the game is not over.

Canal + could sign its first big victory before a next one concerning the call for tenders for the rights to Ligue 1, scheduled for next year.

It remains to be seen whether Canal + keeps all these prizes for itself.

Indeed, he has the possibility of sub-licensing them to another broadcaster.

A more than probable hypothesis.
