By offering himself the finalist of the last Roland-Garros, the Messin confirms his return to form after months of trouble. His coach says.

Since the end of the Olympic Games last July, Ugo Humbert, supposed to embody the next generation of French tennis, has been crushed.

He even left the world top 100 after his defeat in the round of 16 in Halle, a tournament where he was defending champion.

But this week at Wimbledon (where he was 8th runner-up in 2019), the lights are green again.

With his victory in four sets against the seeded 3 Casper Ruud (3-6, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4), after 2:40, the Messin offers a nice performance.

If he committed a lot of unforced errors (48), the Messin managed 51 winning shots against an uninspired Norwegian on grass.

“It feels good in every sense of the word apart from mathematics

(the tournament does not distribute points this year, editor's note)

,

confides his coach Thierry Ascione.

He beats a very high level player.

Even if it's not his favorite surface, you still have to beat him.

It allows him to have continuity.

It's been a very long time since he won two consecutive matches.

He plays as he should play.

He is gifted, strong and impactful.

He is an aggressive player.

He must not procrastinate.

“Once again, the Messin drops a top 10 (his seventh career victory).

Ugo never had a complex against the big guys,

” continues Ascione.

It's his average level that he will have to increase if he wants to find the top 30. The key is to win against players less strong than him.

"He's very emotional"

Leaving the Top 100 on Monday for the first time in three and a half years, the Messin had a terrible record of 16 defeats for 5 small victories this season.

And on grass, he didn't shine on his favorite surface either.

But at Wimbledon, he finds colors and dispels doubts alongside Thierry Ascione: “

I don't regret having made the choice to be a little alone lately.

But I'm happy to have Thierry by my side.

I was frustrated not to be 100% physically.

There, things are better.

After the vaccine I was very diminished last season and after the Covid, at the start of the year, I had a string of injuries and defeats.

It feels good to be in the 3rd round for confidence.

It was mega hard, frankly it was hard.

I was fed up and I

during the first round.

When I was behind for almost two sets to one, I told him that I was fed up and that I couldn't take it anymore because it was tensing me up when I wanted it to work so badly.

And he told me that I was strong, much stronger than him (

Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry)

and that I was going to win both sets after the third.

And then I said to myself the same, that it didn't matter and that against Ruud on grass I could do it.

Ascione had to find the words to make up for the ills: “

The goal of trainers and coaches is to make the players independent.

But there are times for it.

And now, maybe it wasn't the right time to be alone.

We had to clean up his moods.

He's super emotional.

He must not ask questions, he must fight and get back to where he belongs

(the Frenchman has long been a resident of the top 30).

There was no reason to lose confidence.

Humbert's performance was successful in particular under the eyes of Sébastien Grosjean, the captain of the Blues in the Davis Cup and Paul-Henri Mathieu, the high level manager at the FFT.

“He had a solid game.

He took a bit of time to find the right balance in his game but he had a good attitude.

On this surface, when he manages to put his game in place, he can be very efficient.

What is important for him to regain confidence with the victories.

The game level returns.

Confirmation expected in the 3rd round against David Goffin.
