Bad news for equestrian sports and the organizers of the CHIO in Aachen: The 17-year-old stallion Allstar owned by British eventing world champion Rosalind Canter was put to sleep in an Aachen veterinary clinic on Saturday.
After a jump, the horse had lost its left front leg and there was no fall.
"The injury could not be operated on," tournament director Frank Kemperman told WDR: "The owners then made the decision."
That was a heavy blow for the cavalry, said Kemperman: "But it was an accident that can always happen."
Rosalind Canter had great difficulty putting her horror into words.
"There is nothing that could express the love and respect I have for Alby," said the 36-year-old: "He was such an integral part of my life and career, many, many people will never forget him."
With Allstar, Canter won team and individual gold at the 2018 World Championships in Tryon.
