The 18-year-old Israeli sprinter set an amazing result of 20.55 seconds, thus breaking his previous record of 15 hundredths, which was achieved only last week at the Israeli championships held in Givat Ram in Jerusalem.
Afrifa was born in Israel to parents who came here from Ghana, when his father came to Israel about 32 years ago as an employee of the Ghanaian consulate, in 2010 with his family (his parents Cynthia and Prince, and his sister Mercy three years younger) received permanent resident status, following a decision Government not to deport the children of foreign workers who were born in Israel and meet certain criteria.
In early July 2020 the circle closed and Afrifa’s struggle bore fruit.
After struggling with the state bureaucracy, high-level recommendations and finally the final stamp with the approval of Interior Minister Aryeh Deri, the young athlete, received the long-awaited announcement that he could start representing Israel, when the answer came that he was a state citizen and his future seemed ahead.
