FC Bayern icon: Sammer brings up Matthäus as DFB sports director – “How he feels about football”

The post of sports director has been vacant at the German Football Association for years.
Matthias Sammer is now campaigning for ex-Bayern Lothar Matthäus.
Munich/Frankfurt am Main – The post of sports director at the German Football Association (DFB) has been vacant since the beginning of 2017.
Hansi Flick, coach of FC Bayern Munich and now national coach, held this position for the last time.
From September 2014 to January 2017. From August 2012 to July 2013, Robin Dutt was DFB sporting director.
DFB sports director: From Matthias Sammer to Robin Dutt to Hansi Flick
Before that, there was a so-called DFB sports manager between 2006 and 2012.
His name is: Matthias Sammer.
The Saxon worked at the association's headquarters for six years before becoming Bayern Munich's sporting director.
And today?
Would it make sense to reinstall a sports director?
The former functionary Sammer was

The 54-year-old spoke out for an icon of German football: record national player Lothar Matthäus.

“I always mentioned Lothar a bit.
It's wonderful how he feels football, how he talks about it, what instincts he has.
In order to be beneficial to people in this position at the same time.
Most of them are scared and think: 'Oh, if he comes now, oh, what does he want and what is he criticizing.'
It's always about improving the big things, sometimes making small hints," said Sammer at
Bild.
He himself is no longer suitable for this job: "Accordingly: I'm happy where I am.
And if someone wants to know something about me, they can ask me at any time.
And what we make of it and what I make of it is always decided by the questioner.”

Sports journalist and football connoisseur Marcel Reif commented less cryptically on a possible commitment by Sky expert Lothar Matthäus to the DFB.
"Now Hansi Flick is the national coach.
He has to want that too.
The central figure in the national team is still the coach," said Reif at

: "Flick would have to say: Yes, that would be good." Of course, Matthäus is "a great candidate with his expertise and his direct manner".

FC Bayern: Will there still be a DFB job for ex-national player Lothar Matthäus?
After the end of the Joachim Löw era (2016-2021), there was speculation as to whether Matthäus might not even become the new national coach.
However, this position went to the former Löw assistant Flick.
At the time, Matthäus said on Sky: "If people at the DFB think I'm the right one, or I notice that the fans want me too, then you have to think about it, then you have to at least talk about it."
Will there still be something with a DFB job for the 61-year-old?
So far, these are probably just Sammer's mind games.
No such considerations have been made known by the association in the recent past.
