A serious accident at the start, fierce battles for position at the beginning, and at the end Carlos Sainz's first Grand Prix success.
The Spaniard won a varied British Grand Prix at Silverstone ahead of Sergio Perez, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.
Defending champion Max Verstappen had to be satisfied with seventh place due to technical problems.
Mick Schumacher ended up in a good eighth place and got his first World Championship points, Sebastian Vettel was ninth.
The first attempt to start the race had to be stopped after a short time.
After the first corner, there was a pile-up in the field, with the Chinese Zhou Guanyu in the Alfa Romeo being particularly badly affected.
His car took off, flew through the air, rolled over and landed in the safety fences.
All clear at Zhou
However, the initial shock gave way to relief when it became clear that the driver had survived the accident without serious injuries.
Nevertheless, the Chinese was taken to the hospital, but was soon able to leave the hospital again.
The race was restarted an hour late.
Sainz managed to defend his pole position from qualifying against violent attacks from Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc.
In the 12th lap, the world champion took advantage of Sainz's inattentiveness to change the lead, but he didn't benefit for long - the Dutchman had to pit shortly afterwards with a defect and gave first place back to Sainz's Ferrari.
The world champion's car was also clearly impaired afterwards, and Verstappen fell back place by place.
But Sainz didn't stay in front for long either. After a pit stop, his team-mate Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton passed him, and towards the middle of the race Hamilton took the lead to the cheers of his compatriots.
Safety car twelve laps before the end
When the Briton pitted after 33 laps, the picture changed again, both Ferraris passed Hamilton, and the Briton had to start chasing his ninth Grand Prix win at Silverstone with immediate effect.
The safety car had to intervene with twelve laps to go because Esteban Ocon's car stalled on the track.
This brought the entire field together again, and the cards were reshuffled again.
Sainz got the best restart, overtaking his team-mate, behind him Sergio Perez passed Hamilton in the Red Bull.
In the final phase, the pursuers chased each other down the ranks, behind Sainz the positions changed, in the end there wasn't that much variety.
