The German Josef Zinnbauer is the new coach of the Russian first division soccer team Lokomotiv Moscow.

The 52-year-old replaces former German international Marvin Compper at the three-time Russian champions.

The ex-professional, who succeeded Markus Gisdol in March of this year, should continue to be part of the coaching staff.

"Marvin is the most important element in the coaching staff," said the 52-year-old Zinnbauer in an interview published on the club's website on Sunday.

He had spoken to him several times before.

“We get along well, we have the same football philosophy.

I can say that Marvin and I are on the same wavelength,” said Zinnbauer.

The former midfielder had coached Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga in the 2014/2015 season but was released after just 24 games with an average of one point.

Zinnbauer was last with the Orlando Pirates (2019 – 2021) in South Africa.

After his engagement at HSV, he was coach of the second team for a short time before moving to FC St. Gallen (2015 – 2017).

Markus Gisdol had resigned from his position as coach at Lokomotiv Moscow because of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine.

The former coach of the Bundesliga clubs TSG Hoffenheim, Hamburger SV and 1. FC Köln said at the time: »For me, football coaching is the best job in the world.

But I cannot pursue my calling in a country whose leader is responsible for a war of aggression in the middle of Europe.

That doesn't align with my values.«

Zinnbauer becomes the third German at Lokomotiv Moscow.

In addition to Marvin Compper, Lok Moscow also has a German as sports director in Thomas Zorn.
