Summer bet: Jarl Martin arrives at Maccabi Tel Aviv | Israel Today

2022-07-04T12:58:25.306Z

After adding seven players that it knows exactly what it will get from them, Maccabi bets on one loaded with talent, but without European experience • Will Yad Eliyahu finally get some satisfaction from its No. 4 position?

Derrick Williams, Dragon Bender, Quincy Acey, Johnny O'Brien, Victor Rudd, Quincy Miller and Jonah Bolden are a long list of No. 4 players who have moved to Maccabi Tel Aviv in recent years and have not survived more than one season. Some were not bad, But no one has been able to make a real mark, will Jarl Martin, the Yellows' new signing, finally make it?

Honestly, if things had gone as expected in Martin's career, he would not have come to play for Maccabi.

As a high school player, the American, who rises to a height of 2.08 meters, was marked as one of the most talented players in the United States, and took part in the McDonalds tournament - which summons the best players at a young age along with Julius Randall, Andrew Wiggins, and Aaron Gordon, who are now stars in the NBA .

At LSU College where he played from 2013 to 2015, he was one of the best and most impressive players.

But then he slipped into the Australian League, where he led his side Sydney to the championship last season.

Liam Santamaria from ESPN Australia, presenter and senior basketball reporter, told Israel Today about the player: "Martin is a unique player. Last season, he led his team to the championship. He is a very classic and diverse player on offense, making him one who is very difficult to defend. He's an excellent scorer with 38.5% from three last season, but he also has impressive ball handling abilities and a quick first step.

"He has struggled with a number of injuries during his first season at Sydney, and as a result he has never been at his best. Last season, however, he was in excellent shape and perfectly healthy, and that was felt in his game. However, the best thing about Gerald is the man he is. A real gentleman; a very polite and gentle soul who is very supportive of his teammates. He's not a very loud guy.

Man… I'm going to miss Jarell Martin in the @NBL.

Total class act.

The complete package

Jarl has the whole package - an athletic tall, who knows how to lower a ball to the floor, score from all ranges, an outstanding rebounder and an excellent guard in color.

He was selected in the 2015 draft in 25th place by the Memphis Grizzlies, and although he was unable to play in the summer league due to a breach of effort he was given a guaranteed contract in the NBA team from the East.

After missing the summer, he was injured again when he broke his leg during a Memphis training session, and his debut in the best league in the world he made only in December.

After a few games in which he did not stand out and was sent to the development team.

After the All-Star break he enjoyed the injuries of several players, and got more significant minutes and provided games of 15 and 16 points.

In his second season in the league the story was similar, the American skipped between the main team (joined by Wade Baldwin) and the G League team, and only in the 2017-18 season did he take a central position in the Grizzlies.

The new Maccabi forward played 73 games in the 2017/18 season, started in the top five 36 times, and scored an average of 7.7 points with 4.4 rebounds per game.

Despite fine numbers, he was traded to play in Orlando - where he failed to fit in, from which he moved to Cleveland which released him after two months, effectively putting an end to the player's NBA dream.

"Will have to adapt"

Oded Katash said after the signing: "Jarl is a very versatile player. A good attacking player and a very good rebounder on both sides of the pitch. He played in the NBA and Australia so he will have to adapt to the Euroleague" and there seems to be no more accurate way to describe the situation.

After half a season in the Chinese league in the Shenzhen uniform, Martin found a home in Australia, with Sydney Kings.

In fact, his last two seasons on the team were the first time since college that he has completed at the same club for more than an entire season.

The Kings forward has started to show what he knows, in his first season in the evolving NBL, passion with 17.9 points, 40% from three and averaging 6.9 rebounds per game.

The team exercised the option it had on the player and the contract continued for another season, he continued to be the team's hit, the Kings set a rare streak of 13 wins, won the sweep in the semifinals and finals and won their first championship since 2005. In the championship game he exploded with 22 points and 17 rebounds.

Beyond his excellent ability on the floor, he has become a much-loved player in Australia, and in a farewell announcement, the team wrote: "Maccabi Tel Aviv has a basketball animal that has a heart of gold."

It was clear to everyone that Yad Eliyahu was looking for the last player to complete the puzzle, after they managed to get their hands on almost every player they wanted, Maccabi owed Stretch Four with good shooting, and in the European market it was very difficult to find one.

In a summer in which she did not gamble at all - and signed six players with Euroleague experience that she knows more or less what she will get from them, the Yellows believe that the new forward can become a theft of the transfer window.

Yuval Shaham, CEO and founder of UVISION, an Israeli players' agency for colleges, says of him: "He did improve a lot, but I don't know if his shooting can be trusted. He can also play as a chin. I think what Katsh will try to do is play small ball with him and Coulson as tall "They can run and score, but also keep high. It's a big bet because he hasn't given a good season in Europe yet."

On the top - Martin can give Maccabi exactly what she is looking for, a strong forward who hits outside the arc, knows how to take rebounds and gives a strong defense in color - but as coach Oded Katash said, he needs to adapt to the Euroleague, or in other words - no one really knows what Maccabi is You will receive from him.
