Britney Greiner, the WNBA star who was arrested in Russia for drug possession about five months ago, wrote a letter last night (Monday) to US President Joe Biden in which she admitted that she is afraid of ending her life in prison.
The US government has been working for a long time to try to bring it back, but relations between the two countries are far from normal even following the Russian invasion and US aid to Ukraine, so the fear is that Greiner will be jailed for 10 years, the maximum penalty for drug possession.
Greiner was actually arrested a week before the Russian invasion and the Americans even claimed she was arrested "illegally", so they opened negotiations for her return and offered the release of a number of Russian prisoners in return, but talks so far have not borne fruit and her detention has been extended once more.

Greiner sent the letter on July 4, United States Independence Day of course, adding: "On July 4 our family usually honors the service of the people who fought for our freedom, including my father who took part in the Vietnam War. It hurts me to think how we celebrate "This day usually, because now the meaning of freedom for me is completely different. I know you are dealing with a lot of things, but please do not forget me and the other American detainees," she wrote.
"Please, do your best to bring us home," Greiner continued, "I voted for the first time in my life in 2020 and voted for you. I still have so many things to do with my freedom that you can help me restore it. I miss my wife, I miss my family. "To my teammates. I thank you for all you can do to allow me to return home."
The 31-year-old Greiner has twice won the Olympic gold medal with the United States, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, as well as gold at the 2014 and 2018 World Championships.
