Damascus-SANA

They raised the flag of the country high and played the anthem of the protectors of the homeland, peace be upon you, to reach millions of followers who were impressed by the high technical performance attached to the determination and the will to achieve achievement for their country. They are the Syrian athletes who imprinted gold and silver in the record of the Mediterranean Games in its nineteenth edition in the Algerian city of Oran.

Seven medals did not come by chance, but came after great fatigue and effort from the Syrian champions, their coaches, and the General Sports Federation, which spared no effort in securing the best equipment and long-term foreign camps in Russia, the Czech Republic, Japan, Iraq and Iran.

This achievement, which was not achieved nearly thirty years ago, drew a smile on the lips of the Syrians who followed our heroes moment by moment, interacted with them and encouraged them through social media, and they were a strong support for them in reaching the podiums in this great sporting event.

Our champions opened their golden record in the tournament through the equestrian portal of showjumping for the teams through the jockeys Ahmed Hamsho, Shadi Gharib, Amr Hamsho and Laith Al-Ali, ahead of the teams of Turkey, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Libya and Monaco.

The second gold was won by boxer Ahmed Ghosoun, in the 75 kg category, after defeating Serbian Mimic in the first round, then against French Fendor in the semi-finals, and finally against Algerian Younes Nemouchi to maintain his title as the gold medalist of the Mediterranean tournament in Targuana, Spain.

Equestrianism is back again to prove that it continues with achievement, to win another gold in the singles competitions through the jockey Ahmed Hamsho, who starred in the competition, especially in the final round, and was the fastest time among the jockeys who represented the strongest countries in showjumping.

And the conclusion of gold, translated by Olympic weightlifter Maan Asaad, caught the net in the weightlifting competition after lifting 247 kg, bypassing his Algerian rivals Walid Bidani and Egyptian Ahmed Jaber by a large margin.

Silver has another story, its first champion, Majd Al-Din Ghazal, who achieved the silver in the high jump with his jump of 222 cm. His ambition was to maintain his golden title in the previous version, but the injury he suffered prevented him from achieving gold.

And the equestrian singles silver went to Shadi Gharib, to stand side by side with our jockey Ahmed Hamsho, the gold medalist of the same competition, on the podium.

Our Olympic weightlifter Maan Assaad Ghalla concluded our medals with the snatch silver for the over 102 kg weight after lifting 197 kg behind Algerian Bidani who lifted 202 kg.

Yesterday, the first batch of our sports delegation participating in the tournament, consisting of boxing, wrestling, gymnastics, judo and athletics teams, in addition to equestrian, returned, with the second batch returning later.
