Olympiacos are very much hoping to complete the acquisition of left-back Max Lowe from Sheffield United soon, but understand that even if that happens - it will take him time to adapt to the new team and it is not at all certain that it will be right to start against Maccabi Haifa in about two weeks.
Lowe - if he arrives - should cost about 4 million euros and the goal is of course to become the senior left defender in the team, but in the meantime there is a surprise.
Although Olympiacos was far from impressive in the training matches ahead of the Champions League qualifiers against Maccabi Haifa (July 20 in Israel / July 27 in Greece), the one who surprised the best was defender Leonardo Cotris.
At the moment, it seems that he is in a leading position to open against the Israeli champion.
Coutris, who was born in Brazil and grew up in Greece, was bought from Fez Janina for 600,000 euros in 2017, but has not played for Olympiacos since January 2020. He was then loaned out for half a season in Spanish Mallorca, suffered a serious injury and for the last two years played on loan at Fortuna Düsseldorf in Germany.
Last season he moved between the bench and the team and at the end he returned to Olympiacos, where he has a contract until 2023.
The expectation was that Coutris would leave this summer, but in the meantime he looks good and as mentioned leads the race for a place in the team in Haifa in about two weeks.
In Greece, he was even called "the new Zimikas" yesterday - a memory of the left-back who was loaned by Olympiacos to teams from Denmark and the Netherlands, returned, excelled and was sold to Liverpool for 13 million euros.
A few days ago Coutris was injured in training camp, but Olympiacos are hoping and believing he will be fit.

By the way, Coutris has already become a famous football reluctantly.
In 2015, while playing for Argotlis in the Greek sub-league, he was injured during a game against Larissa and carried on a stretcher.
The stretchers who were probably Larissa's fans, pushed him, got tangled, one of them fell on him and after they managed to drag him off the lines, they just threw him on the floor.
This segment went viral, aired on sports shows around the world and even reached the "Alan DeGeneres show."
Meanwhile in Greece, quite a few are dealing with the very unimpressive results and ability of Olympiacos in the preliminaries.
Veteran commentator Yorgos Koloktorunis wrote: "In 39 years of career, I have watched a lot of prep games. I have always said and said it again: these are games that are only for the coaches and I do not understand those who criticize teams because of them."
The commentator continued: "Olympiacos absorbs easy goals and loses, but the results in the warm-up games are not important. The only thing that should matter is whether it will be ready for the games against Maccabi Haifa in the European framework. In football today, when there are so many transfers "Ready at an early stage. If Olympiacos does not succeed at this point, it could cost her dearly because Maccabi Haifa will reach its full potential."
