The image sends shivers down your spine.

While the race rages at the forefront, the spectators encourage without weakening the laggards.

As a group passed through the third cobbled sector of the fifth stage, a few people recklessly set foot on the side of the road.

They watch the runners pass and follow them with their gaze to their right.

Bad idea because they do not see that, on their left, the Italian of TotalEnergies Daniel Oss arrives and rolls precisely on the side.

Shock is inevitable.

A first spectator, dressed in yellow, has the reflex to move away.

But not the next one on his right who is absolutely not looking the right way.

Oss hits him violently in the head with his helmet.

He collapsed on the ground but dragged with him the Austrian Michael Gogl (Alpecin) who did not get up and was forced to retire.

He suffers, according to the first medical report, from a fracture of the clavicle and the iliac bone.

Transported to the hospital, he must undergo surgery in the next few hours.

The reason for the withdrawal of Michael Gogl (Alpecin-Deceuninck): the Austrian was involved in a fall in sector 3, where Daniel Oss hit a spectator on the side of the road.

For his part, Daniel Oss was able to leave.

But he complained of neck pain on arrival in Arenberg.

As a precaution, the team doctor has decided to give him a cervical X-ray which will validate or not his participation in the next day's stage between Binche and Longwy.
