Germany is playing its first game at the Women's European Championship in England on Friday.

How do Freising soccer players rate the tournament and our chances?

District

– It is one of the highlights of this sporting summer: the European Women's Championship in England, the motherland of football.

Of course, the players from the district clubs are also rooting for the German team, which is taking part in the tournament for the first time this Friday (9 p.m.) against Denmark.

Everyone agrees: the Germans have a good chance of winning the title despite strong competition from England and Spain.

But there is much more to this European Championship: Each of these four footballers from the district has their own expectations of the tournament.

  • Sonja Ermair, ex-captain of SG Eichenfeld/Eittingermoos:

“The German group with Spain, Denmark and Finland will definitely not be a sure-fire success.

But I am convinced that we can make it to the next round.

But the Spaniards have also made a giant leap.

I'm already looking forward to following one or the other game, since there are finally reasonable kick-off times and not - as is so often the case in the women's field - in the afternoon.

This is an important step to give women's football more attention.

That's another reason why it made sense to postpone the European Championships by a year, since last year the Olympic Games were also in the foreground alongside the Men's European Championships.

Now everyone has time to follow the girls.

That way you can maybe inspire one or the other for women’s football.”

  • Lorena Sukaj (15), goalkeeper talent at TSV Eching:

“Our group opponents are relatively strong, but definitely beatable.

After the wonderful 7:0 in the friendly against Switzerland, the chances are very good.

Winning the tournament seems more than possible to me - Alexandra Popp is also convinced of the focus and hard work of her team.

They have all developed very well.

Postponing the EM also made sense, because a football match is nothing without spectators.

In terms of timing, it's also great.

Together with the men's World Cup in winter, it's going to be a really great football year and I'm looking forward to it.

Things have also improved financially in football: there are several countries where men and women are paid equally.

This is great progress.

But I think that should be the case for all of Europe.

'Cause we live in a generation

where women's football can be just as good as men's football.

There should be no more of that 'women can't play football' stereotype."

  • Victoria Humplmaier, SpVgg Attenkirchen midfielder:

“I think this European Championship should definitely be the most popular tournament of the year – definitely more popular than the World Cup in Qatar.

England is known to be a football crazy country anyway.

When it comes to women's football, too, they're ahead of us in some areas, such as equal pay.

Of course, the euphoria is also increased by the fact that England itself is going into the tournament as a big favourite.

But I think the Germans will definitely make it into the top three - maybe another title is also possible.

But what I especially wish for is that the European Championship will focus more on women's football and that it will get the attention it deserves.

Unfortunately, women's and men's tournaments do not yet have the same importance.

For example, I had to download an extra EM app

  • Lena Zaindl, district league top scorer from FCA Unterbruck:

“It will definitely be a great atmosphere in England!

Everyone there loves football - and in recent years, major women's tournaments have become increasingly popular.

Since we have already won eight of the twelve European Championships, I naturally hope that the ninth title will follow soon.

The chances of that happening are very good.

The Germans are a great team and have a pretty strong squad.

And even if our opponents are not easy, they are not unbeatable.

Above all, I think it will be very exciting against Spain – but those are the games that you like to see.”
