Mick Schumacher failed to score his fifth championship point of the season in the sprint race of the Austrian Grand Prix.
After eighth place at Silverstone, his first countable success in Formula 1, the Haas driver was again in eighth place for a long time, which would have earned him a point.
Schumacher fended off some overtaking maneuvers by Lewis Hamilton, who then passed in the 22nd of 23 laps.
Since last season, Formula 1 has been experimenting with the sprint format three times a season, so spectators at the tracks should already be able to get racing action on Saturday.
As in Imola in April, Max Verstappen also won the second edition of the current season.
The Dutchman in the Red Bull prevailed in his racing team's home race ahead of title rival Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari, whose teammate Carlos Sainz finished third - the trio will start the main race on Sunday (3 p.m. / Sky) in this order.
The top eight collect World Championship points in the sprint races, which means that Verstappen has further extended its lead.
With 189 points, he is ahead of his teammates Sergio Pérez (151) and Leclerc (145).
Sebastian Vettel in the Aston Martin had to start the sprint from 20th place after poor qualifying, initially worked his way up to 14th place - and then slid into the gravel after contact with Alex Albon in the Williams.
As 19th and last, he followed the field and finally parked the car early.
