The two former Honda riders accompany the eight-time world champion in his fight against physical and mental pain

In 2019, Marc Márquez shared that he did not feel the need to seek psychological help to manage the high demands of the world of competition.

"My best psychologist is my team and the people around me, it's what works best for me," he said a week after becoming world champion for the eighth time in Thailand.

Since then he has had a lot of rain, and between the vision problems and the four operations on his right arm, the last one in early June, the rider from Cervera has not found the regularity necessary to regain his dominance in the category Queen.

Last week, the Catalan updated his followers on the humerus recovery process through his team's official blog.

With the aim of being able to "have a good time and compete at a good level, without suffering or having pain", the 29-year-old runner shared the support he has had from former drivers such as Àlex Crivillé, Mick Doohan and Alberto Puig, current sports director Repsol Honda.

"They are the ones who have advised me the most and I thank them for their support," he wrote.

All of them experienced physical and mental pain during his sports career, and those experiences have helped Márquez to face a process with the right mentality that has even led him to consider his retirement.

“I have spoken to him a couple of times since his shoulder injury.

In the end it is like a conversation between friends, to find out how he is and give him my point of view through my experience, ”Doohan explains to EL PAÍS in a telephone conversation.

“When you compete in any sport, you only think about your goal.

Sometimes it is difficult to see beyond the bubble in which you live, and that is what I have tried to transmit to Marc as someone who has been through it, to give him the perspective that there is much more than motorcycles.

The five-time 500cc world champion between 1994 and 1998 suffered problems in his right leg since the 1992 Assen GP, where he faced the possibility of amputation after complications in the operation.

It took him a couple of seasons to recover the desired level, but since then he has won all the World Championships consecutively until a serious accident in Jerez, in 1999, separated him from the competition definitively: "There are similarities in our cases, although They were other times and different moments in our career.

Each injury is different, but what doesn't make sense is to compete injured, and I also had to realize that.

It was precisely in 1999 when Crivillé, teammate of the Australian, achieved the first title of a Spaniard in the queen category.

"Nobody can teach Marc anything, he's had a really bad time and he knows everything that means," says the former Barcelona driver.

A friend of the family since the beginning of Márquez in 125cc,

el noi de Seva

also suffered many ups and downs in his career.

“I would like a friend, an ex-pilot, to call me in moments of doubt and give me that sincere encouragement.

Even if it is an outstanding character like him, it is always positive to receive this type of support”.

Crivillé suffered a wrist injury in 1997 which caused him to miss many races, although he came back in time to win the same year despite racing through pain.

In 1998, the death of his father destabilized him emotionally and, after winning the title in 1999, his occasional blackouts forced him to retire in 2002.

“The most important thing is health”

"Sometimes, the last thing we talk about is motorcycles, just a couple of brushstrokes," Crivillé details, recommending patience to Márquez.

"What he wants is to get on the bike with the guarantee of being physically fit, he is aware that he must stand firm with the recovery, extend it until he is 100%".

Doohan is of the same opinion, who has transmitted to Márquez that the priority is to take care of the body and the mind.

“At the end of the day, the most important thing is Marc's health. He has a whole life ahead of him and has achieved unforgettable milestones.

He has to feel proud, but now it's up to him to find physical fulfillment again and then see if he can compete again and win, ”he shares.

Pep Font, a sports psychologist at CAR Sant Cugat specializing in motor sports, thinks that Márquez is capable of transferring the experiences of his advisers to tailor-made solutions.

“His intelligence of him allows him to then take what he likes most about each situation and make it his own,” he analyzes.

He defends, yes, that the help of a professional could benefit him: “A psychologist is not a family member or a friend.

In any place in the world and specialty, he fulfills two basic functions: he provides resources and facilitates the interpretation of life situations”.

The expert highlights the pilot's ability to learn and focus on what is useful, thus channeling his energy towards positive approaches.

For now, there is no return date set for the eighth Honda champion, and a medical review in mid-July will determine the next steps, as he himself explained.

In addition to the help of his close entourage and motorcycling legends such as Doohan and Crivillé, the great dominator of the World Cup in the last decade cited Rafa Nadal as one of his sources of inspiration: “When they considered him retired from tennis, he has been able to overcome the pain and win again… I know everything he has suffered and that is why he is a reference for me, because although he is not at his best, he was able to win at Roland Garros”.
